Should I buy an economy car and park my jeep?
Q. I drive 25 mi one way to work 3 days a week, and I live in the middle of nowhere land almost. I have been considering purchasing an economy car to make the trip and not sure if thats the thing to do. The Jeep is a gas guzzler. What kind of economy car would you purchase and is this a good idea?

A. I suggest you to buy a smart, economical car, maybe by exchanging your Jeep from auto galleries. I don't know diesel rates in the US but I know that diesel rates are closing to benzine prices globally. There are some Japanese economical cars like Honda jazz, Toyota Yaris (in Europe, I am not sure in the US), VW polo etc. I think jeep would be demode soon! keep the environment cleaner!

A. A compact car actually describes the size, rated by interior volume in cubic feet. An economy car describes the fuel economy regardless of vehicle size. Typically, economy cars are also compact in size.

A. I will consider a hybrid when I get another vehicle down the road if the prices are still that high, but I'm not going to go out and buy a new car because of the gas prices, that doesn't make good financial sense. Hmm...keep driving my paid off Toyota and pay $4/gallon for gas, or buy a new hybrid and pay $4/gallon for gas plus a $250/month car payment. Tough one.

Should I trade in my SUV for an economy car?
Q. I have a Chevy Equinox that I bought used. I have been making payments for only one year, but we are stressed financially and I am trying to do everything I can to lower payments and pay things off. My gas would be cheaper on the car and a sedan would have plenty of room for my family to ride with me. I am just concerned because I am upside down on my loan on my Equinox. Does this sound like a good plan? Any ideas? Thanks!
Asked by Jennifer - Mon Sep 14 21:43:49 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I know what you are going though, but if you are going to take an equity loss, then you are upside down going into a new car that will be a downgrade. I would really appraise that, especially when you talk about what you will be paying and what kind of mileage you are trying to achieve. You really have to move into small cars or hybrids (depending on drive) to get the better gas mileage. I saw a lot of this when gas hit $4 a gallon. People thought it was a better idea to take a $7k loss so they could say 50% on their fuel bill. When you think about covering the $7k loss, gas is not that expensive because if you spread that extra $7k debt into your new car, the gas hardly makes up for it, make $2 to $3k savings in gas. So a lot of wasted… [cont.]

What are monthly car rental rates for an economy sized car?

A. It really depends on the city that your renting in and rates can vary from company to company. I would suggest going to a car rental booking site, like travelocity, to compare multiple car rental company rates for the city and dates you're looking for. Once you find the cheapest company, you can try going to their website directly to see if they have any deals or e-coupons for monthly specials. Right now, Budget and National are offering $50 off a one- month rental. You can also try check monthly rates using a car rental discount code, if you qualify. What's a reliable, inexpensive, good fuel economy 7-seat car?
Q. My family of 5 needs to graduate from our station wagon to something a little larger. Probably looking for something about 2 years old (so 2006-2008 depending on price).
