Should I buy an economy car and park my jeep?
Q. I drive 25 mi one way to work 3 days a week, and I live in the middle of nowhere land almost. I have been considering purchasing an economy car to make the trip and not sure if thats the thing to do. The Jeep is a gas guzzler. What kind of economy car would you purchase and is this a good idea?
Asked by happydawg - Tue Apr 22 08:40:42 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I suggest you to buy a smart, economical car, maybe by exchanging your Jeep from auto galleries. I don't know diesel rates in the US but I know that diesel rates are closing to benzine prices globally. There are some Japanese economical cars like Honda jazz, Toyota Yaris (in Europe, I am not sure in the US), VW polo etc. I think jeep would be demode soon! keep the environment cleaner!

A. Given any number of other factors that determine the price of rentals -- specifically, the airport at which you're renting and the availability of economy cars from any particular company -- any of these rental car companies could be the cheapest based on where and when you're looking. (For example, I was just pricing rental cars for a weekend day in Boise, and Budget was the cheapest -- but for a similar rental in Milwaukee, they were among the most expensive.) No one here really can answer your question, because there really is no answer to it -- what is cheapest in one place might not be the cheapest elsewhere (just like airline tickets). The best thing you can do is to use a travel website to compare prices (such as expedia.com,… [cont.]

What new car, any make or model but not hybrid, do you suggest for someone looking for a good economy car?
Q. I am looking for good gas mileage, doesn't have to have a lot of frills (I'd like power windows and fog lights). I am trying to compare the Chevy Aveo, Nissan FIT, Chevy Malibu, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Dodge Caliber and a few others. I'd like a sort of hatch back style if I can find it.

A. Of the cars you mention, the Caliber is the most technologically advanced, if that is important to you. The styling is very distinctive, and the dealers are highly motivated to make good deals (extreme warranty, too). The Ford Focus is an excellent car that has held its value well. Very zippy, good ergos. The Civic is sweet, but more money. The Fit is also a Honda, not Nissan. Perhaps you are thinking Versa? The Fit and Versa are very basic cars. Performance is minimal, but so are their prices. Hard to go wrong. The Malibu is, at best, ordinary, and of these cars, it depreciates the most. The Cobalt is less expensive, and probably a better car. The Aveo is the least expensive and is made by Daewoo in Korea. It is no where near… [cont.]

Does an increase in electrical load on a car decrease fuel economy?
Q. Will driving the same car with the minimal electronics running have better fuel economy than the same car with considerably more lights added, high powered sound system, etc. ?
Asked by Michael R - Wed May 21 09:44:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. An increased load on the alternator WILL draw more power from the engine to drive the alternator. Any increased load on the engine will reduce your fuel mileage, so the answer to your question is YES... An increase in electrical load WILL decrease your fuel economy.

What are monthly car rental rates for an economy sized car?
Q. On average how much would it cost to rent a small compact car for 30 days? I am planning to spend a month in San Diego with family, and I don't want to have to always borrow one of their cars. Also, I'm from Florida, and really don't want to drive my car across country. thanks

A. It really depends on the city that your renting in and rates can vary from company to company. I would suggest going to a car rental booking site, like travelocity, to compare multiple car rental company rates for the city and dates you're looking for. Once you find the cheapest company, you can try going to their website directly to see if they have any deals or e-coupons for monthly specials. Right now, Budget and National are offering $50 off a one- month rental. You can also try check monthly rates using a car rental discount code, if you qualify. There are hundreds of membership programs and professional associations that offer car rental discount codes to their members. You can find a list of car rental discount codes for 8… [cont.]

Is when the economy is bad is the best time to buy a new car?
Q. Cause when the economy recovers and gets better inflation will jump and that new car will increase in price, and interest rates will also jump up. Which small secondhand diesel car has best headroom and economy?
Q. I am tall and have stiff joints, and find my Honda CRV easy to get in and out of - it is excellent for headroom. I want a second, smaller, car on a low budget which is diesel - for good economy - and easy to get in and out of. So a tall body in the style of the CRV, on a smaller vehicle, would be ideal. In short, a cheap, reliable, small diesel runabout for a tall man who can't fold into a conventional saloon car.

A. Hi there. I have been looking for a second hand small diesel car for my wife to drive around. I am unfortunately unable to purchase a new car at this stage and would love to run a smaller car. So i am like you looking for a small car. There are hundreds of cars in Japan - Mazda's, toyota's all right hand drive - but the fed. govt. wont allow any of these to be imported. I found a 2001 Toyota Corolla 4 door diesel $1200USD but i am unable to import it because we have these types of cars in Australia!!! But we are allowed to import all the rice burners - supra's, celica's, elcipe's evo's but we cant bring in economical and environmentally freindly cars. The VW Golf is my best buy for a new diesel car. Cheers Paulie G

Car Sales in this economy. Do you think it is a good position?
Q. A car dealer (Honda) is hiring sales people and I was wondering do you think I could make any money in selling cars during this economy? I have 7 years sales experience and the company offers a salary plus commission with health benefits. What are your thoughts?

A. Honda & Ford are probably the best to go with now. Ford has been nothing but good in the last 6mos & their guidance is great for the next quarter. Honda has made no waves that I've heard; that's a good thing right now. (Look at GM & Toyota). Honda & Ford are very strong outside the US which means they're solid. That's good for your job security.

Is there such a thing as a 4x4 car that offers good fuel economy on UK roads?
Q. By 4x4 car I mean a hatchback or saloon, not a 'truck' such as a Range Rover. Does 4x4 wheel drive necessarily equate to poor fuel economy- and if not, can you point me in the direction of a car that might fit the bill (my budget is about 5000)? I am excluding the old 4x4 Panda as too dated and the Quattro as too expensive to run. Thanks!
