A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. The presence of the electric powertrain is intended to achieve either better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle, or better performance. A variety of types of HEV exist, and the degree to which they function as EVs varies as well. The most common form of HEV is the hybrid electric car, although hybrid electric trucks (pickups and tractors) also exist.

Modern HEVs make use of efficiency-improving technologies such as regenerative braking, which converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into battery-replenishing electric energy, rather than wasting it as heat energy as conventional brakes do. Some varieties of HEVs use their internal combustion engine to generate electricity by spinning an electrical generator (this combination is known as a motor-generator), to either recharge their batteries or to directly power the electric drive motors. Many HEVs reduce idle emissions by shutting down the ICE at idle and restarting it when needed; this is known as a start-stop system. A hybrid-electric produces less emissions from its ICE than a comparably-sized gasoline car, as an HEV's gasoline engine is usually smaller than a pure fossil-fuel vehicle, and if not used to directly drive the car, can be geared to run at maximum efficiency, further improving fuel economy.

The hybrid-electric vehicle did not become widely available until the release of the Toyota Prius in Japan in 1997, followed by the Honda Insight in 1999. While initially perceived as unnecessary due to the low cost of gasoline, worldwide increases in the price of petroleum caused many automakers to release hybrids in the late 2000s; they are now perceived as a core segment of the automotive market of the future. Worldwide sales of hybrid vehicles produced by Toyota reached 1.0 million vehicles by May 31, 2007, and the 2.0 million mark was reached by August 31, 2009, with hybrids sold in 50 countries. Worldwide sales are led by the Prius, with cumulative sales of 1.43 million by August 2009. The second-generation Honda Insight was the top-selling vehicle in Japan in April 2009, marking the first occasion that an HEV has received the distinction. American automakers have made development of hybrid cars a top priority.

What are the positives and negatives of a hybrid a car?
Q. I have been involved in a lot of environmental work sinced I educated myself with global warming. I own a car, but it's a truck. I really want to get rid of it and trade it in for a hybrid car. I heard that hybrid cars don't have the best life span and also more expensive to maintain (to fix), and the battery cost a lot if it dies. Could someone please tell me more information about hybrid cars?

A. Hybrids: Pros: more fuel efficient for the average driver, mosty noticable around town (usually). Cons: More weight and complication (and costs) than a standard Gas car or an Electric only car since it has components of each. Lifespan is just fine, current batteries are designed to last the life of the car.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of owning a hybrid car?
Q. Pros and Cons when owning a hybrid car. Is it worth buying one?

A. Assuming you can afford the added expense of buying one, your gas expense will be less and you may help the environment (until you have to dispose of the ton of lead acid batteries!) Make sure you get a good warranty and trade it off before it needs new batteries. (It can cost $5,000 to replace them!) The flex fuel alternative may be less expensive. Lots of new cars can burn it--and regular unleaded gas. Burn E85 if it is available in your area. I live in the middle of corn central--we have lots of it!

How much can a hybrid car save me at the pump?
Q. what happens if i get 3 gallons for a regular car and a hybrid? does the hybrid last longer or what?

A. Drewdude, warrantyvoider and technobuff are all flat-out WRONG about the battery. For anyone who can read, Toyota's warranty on the hybrid battery can be found here: The hybrid battery is covered under an 8-year / 100,000 mile warranty. If it dies before then (virtually unheard-of), Toyota replaces it for FREE. ZIP. ZERO. NADA. $0. And Toyota gives you a $600 bounty for bringing the battery back for recycling if you are going to junk the car. The amount of ignorance and disinformation on these boards are staggering. The only problem right now with hybrids is that they cost more than a comparable regular car. However, some hybrids do have sizeable Federal Tax Credits which negates the extra cost and allows you to save money at… [cont.]
