A hybrid electric (HEV) is a type of hybrid vehicle and electric vehicle which combines a conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. The presence of the electric powertrain is intended to achieve either better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle, or better performance. A variety of types of HEV exist, and the degree to which they function as EVs varies as well. The most common form of HEV is the hybrid electric car, although hybrid electric trucks (pickups and tractors) and buses also exist. Modern HEVs make use of efficiency-improving technologies such as regenerative braking, which converts the vehicle's kinetic energy into battery-replenishing electric energy, rather than wasting it as heat energy as conventional brakes do. Some varieties of HEVs use their internal combustion engine to generate electricity by spinning an electrical generator (this combination is known as a motor-generator), to either recharge their batteries or to directly power the electric drive motors. Many HEVs reduce idle emissions by shutting down the ICE at idle and restarting it when needed; this is known as a start-stop system. A hybrid-electric produces less emissions from its ICE than a comparably-sized gasoline car, as an HEV's gasoline engine is usually smaller than a pure fossil-fuel vehicle, and if not used to directly drive the car, can be geared to run at maximum efficiency, further improving fuel economy. Ferdinand Porsche in 1900 developed the Lohner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid, the first gasoline-electric hybrid automobile in the world. The hybrid-electric vehicle did not become widely available until the release of the Toyota Prius in Japan in 1997, followed by the Honda Insight in 1999. While initially perceived as unnecessary due to the low cost of gasoline, worldwide increases in the price of petroleum caused many automakers to release hybrids in the late 2000s; they are now perceived as a core segment of the automotive market of the future. Worldwide sales of hybrid vehicles produced by Toyota, the market leader, reached 1.0 million vehicles by May 31, 2007; the 2.0 million mark was reached by August 31, 2009; and 2.68 million units by July 2010, with hybrids sold in 80 countries and regions. Worldwide sales are led by the Prius, with cumulative sales of 1.8 million by June 2010. The global market leader is the United States with 1.6 million hybrids registered by December 2009, of which 814,173 are Toyota Prius, and California is the biggest American market. Asked by AUCT!ON - Sun Nov 26 16:03:35 2006 - - 8 Answers - 1 Comments A. Assuming you can afford the added expense of buying one, your gas expense will be less and you may help the environment (until you have to dispose of the ton of lead acid batteries!) Make sure you get a good warranty and trade it off before it needs new batteries. (It can cost $5,000 to replace them!) The flex fuel alternative may be less expensive. Lots of new cars can burn it--and regular unleaded gas. Burn E85 if it is available in your area. I live in the middle of corn central--we have lots of it! Does anyone know which is the best all-around vehicle? Asked by she94606 - Mon May 14 19:18:49 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. There are currently no hybrids that will seat 7 people. There are several mid-size sedan hybrids (Camry, Accord, Altima) which will seat 5. The compact hybrids (Civic, Prius) have 5 seatbelts, but are way too small to comfortably carry 5 passengers. The small SUV hybrids (Higlander, Escape/Mariner, RX300h) only seat 5. Chevrolet Tahoe will be avalible in hybrid version next year and should be a 7 passenger model. With your passenger needs it may be best to wait for the Tahoe. Answered by j76spirit - Mon May 14 19:33:48 2007 What would make you want to buy a hybrid car?
Q. So they spend less gas and pollute less, but what other thing will make you REALLY go tomorrow and switch your current car for a hybrid? Asked by BeachGirl - Tue Mar 6 21:41:20 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. First of all I am in the auto business so I haven't 'owned' a vehicle in the last 24 years, I drive dealer 'demos' . I also drive whatever used cars & trade-ins that i want to. Last year I did an experiment with 3 different vehicles. Each vehicle for 1 week, same kind of driving, same gas station, & same conditions. I reset the computers to calculate the miles per gallon. First I drove a non-Hybrid Escape (6cyl 4X4) -I drive like an idiot & I liked the power & handeling but I get lousy gas mileage no matter what i drive because I have a lead foot! I also only live 4 miles from my job so I don't do much highway driving, but I drive the side streets like as if they ARE a highway. Then switched to a Hybrid Honda Accord. (also 6 cyl, but… [cont.] Answered by Shelby - Wed Mar 7 09:52:15 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Hybrid car" Fix for Civic hybrids' dying batteries may hurt gas mileage, acceleration - Los Angeles Times
